The rustic vineyard were first planted in 1988 and are now hosting tastings in their cellar 7 days a week. The winery is no stranger to recognition with winemaker, Frank van de Loo being nominated as a 2018 finalist in the Winemaker of the Year awards conducted by Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine. In celebration of Wine Week, Enotria Wines and Lucas Studios will host Pilates in the Vineyard on Saturday 21 March. National Photographic Portrait Prize 2018
National Portrait Gallery

This annual event is one of the highlights of the National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition calendar. Each year, Australian portraiture photographers present their best work. The 2018 winner is Lee Grant with her portrait of Charlie, a young man living in social housing in Canberra. Highly Commended went to Filomena Rizzo’s My Olivia and Art Handlers’ Award went to Stephanie Simcox’s Joey. But there is still time for you to be involved! The People’s Choice Award is your chance to vote for your favourite photograph plus win some great prizes, including an accommodation package at Crowne Plaza Canberra valued at $2,000. The Art of Science

Take a trip back to 1800 and Nicolas Baudin’s expedition from France to Australia to map the coastline of what was then called New Holland. The exhibition showcases illustrations of nature and local people and rare documents and maps.

Now start travelling back towards the present day, but pause at 1968. This was the year the National Library’s building opened, so to celebrate 50 years, visit this exhibition and relive what was making headlines and changing the world.

Balloon Spectacular
10 to 18 March, from 6.15am daily.

Each dawn the air will be filled with glowing balloons. Taking off from the grounds of Old Parliament House, come along to watch the balloons inflate en masse and then rise gracefully into the sky. Balloons come from across Australia and the world to be a part Enlighten. Kids will love spotting the novelty shaped balloons, in 2018 look out for Kermit the Frog and a multi-coloured hummingbird. Skyfire
17 March, 8.30pm Saturday evening.

Enlighten 2018 will finish with a bang with the 30^th anniversary edition of the Skyfire fireworks and aerial display. The shores of Lake Burley Griffin will come alive in colour; the enthralling display is set to music which is simultaneously broadcast on radio station Hit 104.7. To make an evening of it, come to Regatta Point to have dinner and enjoy entertainment from 6pm with the fireworks starting at 8.30pm.

1. Eco Elves Night Market

The annual Eco Elves Night Market is held by the Canberra Environment Centre and is perfect for shoppers looking for eco-friendly, handmade, fair trade, local and upcycled Christmas gifts.  Enjoy live music and sunset views of Lake Burley Griffin while you browse the stalls set amongst the gumtrees. Food is available for purchase and a wine bar will offer local wines. The Eco Elves Night Market is a family friendly event with a kids play area and a craft section with DIY gift wrapping.

2. A Very Canberra Comedy Festival Christmas 2017

If the busyness of the festive season is starting to feel a little stressful, laugh it off with some of the Canberra Comedy Festival’s great comedians for A Very Canberra Comedy Festival Christmas.  This two hour event features a great line up of comedy stars including Joel Creasey, Fiona O’Loughlin, James Smith, Maddy Weeks, Anthony Tomic and more.

3. Christmas at the Old Bus Depot Markets

Canberra’s Old Bus Depot Markets started in 1994 and are still a hugely popular part of the city’s Sunday culture after 23 years in operation. During December the markets will be open on both Saturdays and Sundays, with special Christmas themed market days during the month.

On Saturday 2 December, the markets will hold a ‘Christmas Kids’ event with pony and donkey rides, face painting, a jumping castle and more. Santa will be at the markets for Christmas Kids from 10am to 4pm. Then again on 3, 9, 10, 16 and 17 December from 12.00 – 3.00pm.

Browse through a diverse range of stalls to find everything you will need for Christmas including gifts, homewares and edible Christmas treats.

4. The 12 Barks of Christmas

Head along to Glebe Park on Sunday 3 December for RSPCA ACT’s 12 Barks of Christmas carols event. Kick off the festive season at a fun event where the whole family is welcome, even your four legged pooch!

There will be music, dog activities, market stalls and more, with all proceeds going to the RSPCA ACT shelter. Entry fee applies. See the website for details and tickets.

4. Christmas in Canberra City

This year, Canberra city is putting on a different kind of Christmas celebration. Instead of the giant Christmas tree that is usually installed in Garema Place, this year 65 real Christmas trees will transform Glebe Park (adjacent to Crowne Plaza Canberra) into a ‘festive forest’ complete with an overhead canopy of lights. There will also be entertainment, food for purchase and visits from Santa. Red Nose is the charity partner for the Christmas event in Glebe Park and is hosting a special Garden of Light, where families can place a candle in memory of a loved one.

In December, the markets will be Christmas themed.  Find some delicious festive treats for your Christmas table in the gourmet food hall, tick off your Christmas gift list with some unique purchases or buy yourself a special something. All products on sale, including fashion, jewellery, homewares, toys, artwork and more, are Australian made and designed.

The first weekend of August is a great time to visit Canberra if you love fashion, with two fashion markets being held.

At the Canberra Fashion Market, browse through vintage, new and recycled clothing. Held at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) 10am – 3pm, Saturday 5 August. Frock Up Pop Up Canberra offers a variety of vintage, antique, retro and designer clothing – you might just come away with a new favourite wardrobe item! 4-5 August atGriffith Neighbourhood Centre.

While you’re in Canberra, check out the Canberra Centre’s new wellness and beauty precinct, featuring Mecca Maxima’s first Australian concept store, along with a range of other retailers including Jurlique, Inglot, Aveda, Lush, Napolean Perdis and many more.

If you enjoy live theatre and dance, see Bangarra Dance Theatre at the Canberra Theatre Centre, with performances from 3-5 August or hear Ed Kuepper live at The Street Theatre on Friday 4 August. Also at the Canberra Theatre Centre is The Ten Tenors performing their 20^thAnniversary Tour on Sunday 6 August.

On Saturday 5 August, sports fans can see the action as Giants v Melbourne at Manuka Oval, with kick-off at 1:45pm.

Celebrate the season with the Winter Festival at the National Portrait Gallery on Sunday 6 August, from 10am – 4pm. Suitable for all ages and abilities and all materials are provided.

Weekend 11-13 August

Have a weekend of LEGO in Canberra with the Brick Expo held over 3 days 11-13 August, at The Hellenic Club of Canberra. This event features hundreds of interesting creations by local and interstate LEGO collectors and modellers. This event is hugely popular so it is recommended to purchase your tickets in advance online. You can also see the Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO® Bricks exhibition at the National Museum of Australia, opening on 28 July. This travelling exhibition from Sydney Living Museums features 20 amazing skyscraper models. Visitors can have a go at creating their own tower with more than 200,000 loose bricks in the hands-on area. This is a ticketed exhibition and bookings online are recommended.

You never know what interesting treasures you might find at the Old Bus Depot Markets, held each Sunday. On 13 August, the Portobello Road themed market will include an eclectic mix of treasures to browse through, including jewellery, crockery, small homewares and more.

If you enjoy art and culture, there are a number of exhibitions showing over this time, including Dempsey’s People at the National Portrait Gallery – an exhibition featuring 52 rarely-seen portraits of English street people in the first half of the 19^th Century. At the National Gallery of Australia, there are several exhibitions showing, including Defying Empire: National Indigenous Art Triennial, Pipilotti Rist: Worry will vanish revelation, Rodel Tapaya: New art from the Philippines and more.

Weekend 18-20  August

See fun indoor and outdoor activities including dart ball, arcade games and amusement, displays, entertainment, food stalls and more at the Ultimate Playground, presented by Canberra Big Boys Toys, being held on 19 and 20 August at Exhibition Park in Canberra.

On 20 August, see the Canberra Raiders v Panthers in Round 24 of the NRL Telstra Premiership at GIO Stadium, with kick-off at 2pm.

As part of National Science Week, head along to the Geoscience annual Open Day on Sunday 20 August from 9am-2pm, where you can participate in a range of hands-on activities plus science displays and talks.

Weekend 25-27 August

The Canberra Writers Festival is being held over the weekend of 25-27 August, with the theme ‘Power, Passion, Politics’. This three day festival includes free and ticketed events with panel sessions, workshops, dining events and more. View the program online.

On 25 August, see the Raiders v Knights in Round 25 of the NRL Telstra Premiership at GIO Stadium, with kick-off at 6pm.

At Stromlo Forest Park on 26 August, you can see some of Australia’s best mountain bike endurance racers compete in The Shimano Mountain Bike Grand Prix Round 5. Entry is free for spectators.

On Canberra’s sunny winter days, with gorgeous blue skies and crisp air, there’s some fun outdoor activities to enjoy – just bring your jacket and scarf! On cooler days, there’s plenty of indoor attractions and activities to keep people of all ages busy. Many of Canberra’s national institutions and attractions have special school holidays activities on offer, making Canberra a perfect family destination for the July 2017 school holidays. .

Here’s some of our top suggestions for what to do in Canberra these school holidays.

Have fun in the snow or on the ice

A great first snow experience only around 40 minutes from Canberra city, there’s snow play, beginners ski and snowboard lessons, toboganning and more. Sessions have limited numbers, so prior online bookings are recommended. As activities at Corin Forest are weather dependent, it’s best to check the conditions before you go.

In the heart of Canberra city at Garema Place, less than 10 minutes walk from the hotel, enjoy outdoor ice skating at the pop up skating rink, open from 23 June until 16 July. Bookings online via the Skating At website.

See a movie or stage show

Dendy Cinemas Canberra are only a 10 minute walk from the hotel, showing latest releases, while Palace Electric Cinema is located in New Acton, also not far from the hotel.

At the National Film and Sound Archives, family movies will be showing from 5-7 and 13-14 July 2017at 11am. Movies include The Neverending Story and Beauty and the Beast. Check the website for details. Tickets are $8 with children under 3 free.

The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party live show is on at the Canberra Theatre Centre from 12-15 July 2017. This fun physical theatre show includes circus skills, balancing acts, acrobatics and more. Tickets online from the Canberra Theatre Centre.

Be creative with arts and crafts

At the National Portrait Gallery, children between 4-8 can enjoy Portrait Play, an activity involving drawing and creative activity. Bookings are essential. The cost is $8 per child with supervising parents at no charge. Weekdays at 11am from Monday 3 – Friday 14 July 2017.

At the Belconnen Arts Centre, there is a fun daily Kids Art Club program of arts and crafts for two age groups, 5-7 years and 8-12 years. Weekdays from 10:30-12:30, $20 per session per child. Book online.

Learn about Australian history

Visit the National Museum of Australia, located alongside Lake Burley Griffin, where you can browse through permanent galleries including Landmarks, Journeys and the First Australians gallery. Until 9 July, see 140 years of cycling history with the Freewheeling: Cycling in Australiaexhibition.

During ACT school holidays, weekends and public holidays the Australian War Memorial’s Discovery Zone enables children to explore five areas inspired by Australia’s military history. There are several temporary exhibitions on show, along with the permanent galleries.

 See Australian animals in their natural habitat

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve is home to a range of Australian animals including platypus, possums, wombats, emus, kangaroos and more. The Sanctuary at Tidbinbilla is a large wetlands ecosystem with an accessible pathway that allows visitors to wander through the habitats. There are also 22 marked trails, ranging from a short walk to a full day bushwalking. Don’t forget to look for koalas and other wildlife!

In Canberra’s North, you can find Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary, part of Canberra Nature Park that is open during the day to visitors. On select nights throughout the year, the Sanctuary offers twilight tours for ages 10+. During the July school holidays, there is a special Kids Night Walk on 3 July and Meet a Betong experience on 7 July. Bookings for the Night Walk and Twilight Tours are essential via the website.

What are black truffles?

Black truffles or tuber melanosporum is a highly sought after fungus that grows in the root systems of specific trees, including oak, hazelnut and birch and is also known as Périgord truffle or French black truffle.

This gourmet delicacy is prized by chefs and foodies for the unique aroma and ability to enhance other foods. The flavour of truffles is intensified by heat, so truffles are best enjoyed when added to warm foods.

Fresh is best when it comes to truffles! As they will continue to lose flavour the longer they are stored, it is best to use truffles within five to seven days of harvesting. While the price of truffles is high, generally only a few grams per dish is needed.

It’s hard to describe the aroma and flavour of truffles, although they have often been described as being earthy, woody or similar to garlic or onions. You’ll have to try for yourself!

Cooking classes

If you haven’t cooked with black truffles before, you might not be sure of how to prepare them, what dishes benefit from the addition of truffles and how to make the most of using them in your cooking.

Head along to the Capital Region Farmers Markets on a Saturday morning during the Canberra Truffle Festival and have the chance to purchase some fresh truffles and truffle products and maybe have the chance to chat with one of the growers! While you’re there, enjoy a freshly brewed coffee while you browse the many stalls include fresh breads and pastries, fruit, vegetables, local honey, local olive oil and more.

At Westfield Belconnen on Saturday 24 June there will be a special truffle themed market day with cooking demonstrations by local chefs, market stalls, giveaways, food and wine tastings and more. Westfield Woden will hold a similar event on Saturday 22 July.
